Organ Donation Awareness for Police Trainees in Channapatna

MOHAN Foundation conducted an interactive session on organ donation on 19th January 2021 at the Channapatna Police Training Centre which was attended by around 262 trainee police officers.

Mr. Thippeswamy, Transplant Coordinator from Jeevasarthakathe, Mrs. Hemavathi and Mr. Marulappa LN Transplant Coordinators, and Mrs. Ranjini Shankar M S, Project Manager from MOHAN Foundation were the speakers at the event.

The following topics were discussed in detail:

  • MOHAN Foundation’s mission and activities
  • Brain stem death
  • Circulatory death
  • Difference between coma and brain death
  • Jeevasarthakathe and its role
  • Organ allocation system in Karnataka
  • The burden of organ failure and need for organ donation
  • Importance of a donor card

A video of a donor family sharing their experience and talking about the importance of organ donation was played for the audience. During the interaction, the following questions were raised:

  • Time duration for organs to be transplanted
  • Role of police officers
  • Consent form details
  • Allocation of organs
  • Organ trading/commerce
  • How do hospitals ensure organ compatibility?
  • Legal formalities
  • How are organs persevered during transportation?
  • Green corridor
  • Does my age/fitness level disqualify me from being a donor?
  • Role of Jeevasarthakathe
  • How to handle RTA cases
  • Difference between coma and brain death

The audience gave positive feedback and appreciated the efforts of the Foundation.
