Online awareness session on organ donation conducted for the students of ITM University-Institute of Technology & Management, Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh

On October 24, 2020, MOHAN Foundation was invited to conduct an online awareness session on organ donation for the students of the Institute of Technology & Management (ITM), Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh. The session was a part of the webinar series titled “Career Transformation” which was an initiative of Training, Augmentation and Placement (TAP) Cell of ITM University.

 

Dr. Muneet Kaur Sahi, Programme Manager, MOHAN Foundation (Delhi-NCR) was invited as a speaker for the topic of “Organ Donation - A Gift of Life.” The webinar was moderated by Mr. Anurag Mishra, ITM-TAP Coordinator.

 

ITM University is a multidisciplinary University with an aim to foster the highest quality teaching and research across the academic spectrum. The ITM University has been crowned with more than 30 awards and ranked 24 times among the best universities of the country by government and other agencies. The University is approved by the concerned regulatory bodies of the Govt. of India & the state of Madhya Pradesh, to run courses in Agriculture, Architecture, Arts & Design, Commerce, Computer Applications, Engineering, Fine Arts, Journalism, Law, Management, Nursing, Pharmacy, Physical Education, Sciences, and Teacher Education.

 

At the beginning of the session, Mr. Anurag welcomed all the participants and gave a brief introduction to ITM University and “Career Transformation” webinar series. He introduced Dr. Muneet and invited her to begin the session. She started the session by informing the audience about her association with MOHAN Foundation and that MOHAN is not someone’s name but an acronym that stands for Multi-Organ Harvesting Aid Network.

 

She explained the basic concepts of organ donation and transplantation with the help of a simple PowerPoint presentation. The following topics were explained in detail: 

  • Organ donation and its need in society
  • When and how does organ donation take place?
  • Who can donate organs and Contraindications to organ donation?
  • Transplant waiting list in India
  • Brain death
  • Difference between brain death and coma
  • Transplant Law
  • Role of MOHAN Foundation
  • Eye donation

To encourage the participants and to clear their doubts on age not being a bar for donation, she gave the example of a 74-minute old baby in United Kingdom who donated her kidney and liver cells. She became UK’s youngest organ donor. She also gave the example of India’s oldest donor, 88-year-old, Mr. Tej Ram (Ex-Trustee Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, Delhi) who donated his kidneys and liver after death. The definition of “near relatives” for organ donation in the language of The Transplantation of Human Organs Act & Tissues Act, 1994, was also explained.

 

While on the subject of brain death, a short movie was shown to give clarity on the subject and to underline the difference between coma and brain death. To gauge participants understating of brain death, she asked them a question - If a patient’s heartbeat stops, can he donate organs in this state?

 

The participants enthusiastically contributed to the discussion and asked many queries. To name a few:  

  • What is the age limit for organ donation?
  • How accurately can doctors identify brain death?
  • Is there any reflex action in human body after brain death?
  • What can be donated in natural death?
  • What is the time limit for organ donation after death?
  • How long time does it take to donate corneas?
  • Is it important to match the blood group for organ donation?

 

Dr. Muneet explained the importance of eye donation and the whole process of eye donation. She also explained how one could pledge to be an organ donor. 

 

At the end of the session, she also informed the students about MOHAN Foundation’s one week and one-year training course on Transplant Coordination and the fastest-growing career field of Transplant Coordination in the healthcare sector.

 

Prof. Mini Anil-Dean of ITM University, Dr. Ranjit Singh Tomar-Vice Chancellor of ITM University and Mr. Rakesh Kumar Dhaka-Incharge of ITM Hospital & Research Center were the chief audience. They were overwhelmed by Dr. Muneet’s presentation and expressed their interest in organizing another awareness session on a big scale for the staff and students of ITM Hospital & Research Center in November - 2020.

 

At the end of the session, Mr. Anurag gave a vote of thanks. He said that the session was very interesting and informative. The session went on for 40 minutes and close to 20 participants attended the session.
