Enacted in 1994, the Transplantation of Human Organs Act completes 25 years this year and the Government Medical College of Nagpur celebrated the occasion by organizing an organ donation awareness event. The event was held on the 15th July 2019 at OTG Seminar Hall of the hospital. Mrs. Chaya Jadhav, the nursing in-charge of OTG had extended the invitation to MOHAN Foundation to deliver an awareness talk.

Nurses and other staff from various wards, ICU, PICU, NICU, SICU and Trauma Center were present at the event. Dr. Naresh Tiripude Professor and head of Anesthesiology at GMC, Nagpur; Mrs. Chaya  Jadhav Nursing In-charge of OTG; Dr. Ravi Wankhede Director of MOHAN Foundation & Secretary of Zonal Transplant Coordination Center (ZTCC) and other eminent doctors and nurses were present.

Dr. Naresh Tripude spoke a few words about organ donation following which Dr. Ravi Wankhede briefly spoke about MOHAN Foundation and the legal and ethical aspects of organ donation as well.

Dr. Wankhede gave information on the following subjects:

• Why is law important in organ donation?
• The Transplant Law
• Green corridor
• Time factor in organ donation and transplantation
• The role of police in organ donation
• Natural death and Brain death
• Whom to contact for organ donation?
• Using MOHAN Foundation’s website and help line number

The following were a few questions asked by participants

• Who would be the right person to sign consent forms at the time of organ donation?
• Who should be contacted for eye donation?
• How will apnea test help in brain death declaration?

Around 40 doctors and nursing in-charges were present and 3 of them signed consent forms and received donor cards. Mrs. Chaya Jadhav thanked MOHAN Foundation for being a part of the event.
