One Week Transplant Coordinators’ Training Programme organised in Raipur, Chhattisgarh

Under the aegis of National Organ & Tissue Transplant Organisation (NOTTO), Directorate General of Health Services, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Govt. of India and Regional Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization (ROTTO) Mumbai, MOHAN Foundation in collaboration with Chhattisgarh Human Organ Transplant Organization, Raipur conducted a one-week Transplant Coordinators’ Training Programme from 2nd to 6th February 2018 at B. R. Ambedkar Hospital, Raipur. There were 46 participants – 35 from the government sector and 11 from the private sector. The training was supported by DKS Post Graduate Institute and Research Centre (DKSPGI) and the Tata Trusts.

At the inauguration, the dignitaries who were present were – Dr. A. K.Chandrakar, Director of Medical Education, Government of Chhattisgarh, Dr. Vimal Bhandari, Director, NOTTO, Dr. Sunil Verma, Honorary Advisor, DKSPGI, Dr. Shashank Gupta, Head of the Department of Medicine, B. R. Ambedkar Hospital, and Dr. Punit Gupta, Nodal Officer, Chhattisgarh Human Organ Transplant Organization. MOHAN Foundation was represented by Dr. Sumana Navin, Course Director and Ms. Pallavi Kumar, Executive Director, Delhi NCR.

During the training, the participants were taken through the medical and legal framework of organ and tissue donation and transplantation. There were presentations on kidney disease and the different aspects of kidney transplantation and transplant coordination by Dr. Punit Gupta, Dr. Sanjeev Kale, Dr. Yogesh Barapatre, Dr, Prawash Kumar Chowdhary, Dr. Sainath Pattewar and Dr. Suresh Singh. The kidney transplantation videos that Dr. Suresh Singh showed were very educative. The topic of body donation was dealt with by Dr. Alok C. Agrawal while Dr.Dakshesh Shah spoke about skin donation and Dr.M. L. Garg on eye donation and eye banking. The MOHAN Foundation faculty covered a number of topics including public advocacy, facets of a transplant coordinator, setting up a deceased donation programme, history of transplantation, ethical aspects, organ retrieval, packing and transport. The lectures were interspersed with films, group activities, quiz and role play.

On day two, the training was integrated with a CME on ‘Intensive Care and Brain Death. ’Mr. Subrat Sahoo, IAS, Principal Secretary Health, Family Welfare and Medical Education, Government of Chhattisgarh was the Chief Guest. He emphasised that an attitudinal change in all stakeholders (administrators, health care professionals and legal experts), awareness drives and fine tuning of processes were required if the organ donation and transplantation programme was to be successful in the state. Also present were Mrs. Ranu Sahu, IAS, Director of Health Services, Dr. A. K. Chandrakar, Director of Medical Education, Dr. Vimal Bhandari, Director, NOTTO, Dr. Sunil Shroff, Managing Trustee, MOHAN Foundation, and Dr. Sunil Verma, Honorary Advisor, DKSPGI. At the CME, Dr. Sunil Shroff spoke on the role of critical care in deceased organ donation. Dr.Vimal Bhandari gave an overview of the transplantation law in India and Ms. Pallavi Kumar elaborated on the role of a transplant coordinator. Dr.Nikhilesh Jain,Consultant, Critical Care Unit, CHL Hospital, Indore spoke on identification and certification of brain death as well as maintenance of a potential deceased donor. There was audience interaction through case studies. Dr. Sumana Navin conducted the Organ Donation Pathway activity to familiarise the participants with how to proceed when there is a deceased donor in the hospital.

At the valedictory function on 6th February 2018, Dr. Sunil Verma and Dr.Renu Kale congratulated the participants on completing the training and wished them success.
