Prof. Toe Lwin from Myanmar visits MOHAN Foundation

Eminent urologist Prof. Toe Lwin from Myanmar visited MOHAN Foundation, Chennai on 16th June 2011 to learn more about the cadaveric(deceased) organ donation programme in India. He visited the Foundation on the invitation of Dr. Sunil Shroff, Managing Trustee. Prof. Lwin who is now based in Yangon trained in Liverpool, U.K. He said although a law was passed in Myanmar about three years ago permitting cadaveric organ donation and transplantation, systems were yet to be put in place to actually make it happen. He added that since Myanmar was predominantly a Buddhist country, there was a willingness to donate one's organs, especially among the Buddhist monks. Live related kidney transplantation is being done on a small scale.

Prof. Lwin interacted with the staff of MOHAN Foundation who apprised him of the work that the Foundation has done over the past 14 years. He expressed interest in the Transplant Coordinators' Training Programme and said that he would like to send a senior nurse here to be trained for a period of three months. He was appreciative of the work that was being done in Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh on the cadaveric organ donation front and hoped to spend more time with us on his next visit.
