CME on Organ Donation at Saveetha Medical College

On 17th August 2016 Saveetha University took another step in its continuing journey towards excellence with the inauguration of the Gift Of A Life (GOAL) Foundation along the sidelines of the World Organ Donor Day.  A CME on organ donation was organized as the first event of the foundation for the benefit of the medical students.

 The function was presided over by the Chancellor, Saveetha University, Dr. N. M. Veeraiyan and Director, Saveetha Medical College and Hospital, Dr. Saveetha Rajesh. Dr. G. Viswanathan Chancellor VIT University, Vellore was the Chief Guest and Prof. Sunil Shroff, Founder Trustee, MOHAN Foundation was the Guest of Honour. Noted actor and choreographer Ms. Gayatri Raguram was a special invitee.

Dr.  T. Gunasagaran, Dean Saveetha Medical College kicked off the proceedings. The GOAL Foundation has been set up with two primary goals -

 1) To increase awareness about and promote the cause of organ donation in the country

 2) To facilitate organ transplants among the neediest sections of our society.

These noble ends received a welcome fillip with the announcement of a very generous donation of Rs 10 crores towards the foundation by Dr G. Viswanathan.

 Dr. P.  Soundararajan, Head of Department, Nephrology at Saveetha Medical College and Hospital addressed the gathering and highlighted the burden of the disease in the country and the shortage of organ donors. A donor card was released at the function and Ms.  Gayatri Raguram graciously volunteered to be the first Organ Donor registered under the GOAL Foundation. The function was followed by a CME on Concepts of Organ Donation and Pioneering Organ Donation in India, delivered by Dr Sunil Shroff.   He spoke of the law, ethics and value of deceased organ donation.  He explained the coordination requirements for a deceased donation and transplantation.  He explained the need of a trained transplant coordinator and how it helps in increasing rate of donation. He highlighted the achievements of Tamil Nadu in deceased organ donation. Around 200 students and staff attended the CME. 

This was followed by a lively Q and A session.  A organ donation information stall was placed outside the auditorium with brochures by MOHAN Foundation, 130 of students and faculty members of Saveetha University signed up as organ donors with GOAL Foundation.
