The Indian Medical Association (IMA) of Bramhapuri (District Chandrapur) in Maharashtra invited Dr. Ravi Wankhede Centre Head & Director of MOHAN Foundation, Nagpur to deliver a talk on organ donation on 25th January 2016 and to spread awareness of the subject amongst doctors, staff and students of N.H. College Bramhapuri, Cadets of NCC and NSS Volunteers. Dr. Khijendra Gedam, President took the lead to arrange the talk. He introduced Dr. Ravi Wankhede to the audience. IMA Secretary Dr. Bharat Ganvir spoke on the importance of the subject.

Dr. Ravi Wankhede gave an elaborate a talk on the historical, legal, social, religious and relevance of organ donation through PPP. He informed the gathering that organs and tissues could be donated while living as well as after death. He elaborated on the category of ‘living’ donations and the rules thereof as recently the State was in the news about kidney selling racket involving a neighboring country. He said, donating a kidney by living people did not lead to any health issues, as also part of liver and other organs. He stressed the need to donate eyes and skin in Natural death, as there was a eye bank nearby and that skin could be sent to Nagpur.

He emphasized on ‘brain death’ a condition which needs to be understood to be a permanent and irreversible. Such patients are diagnosed in a Hospital with Intensive care services. He said such patients have the potential to save eight patients requiring kidney’s, liver, heart, lungs, pancreas besides several tissues like eyes, skin, heart valves, bones, etc.

He asked the doctors to maintain a brain dead case, so that the patients could be shifted to Nagpur which is just two hours by road. He said, he would speak to the Police Commissioner to provide a green corridor so as to hasten the journey. Dr. Wankhede informed the audience the work being done my MOHAN Foundation as well as ZTCC-Nagpur. He said so far eight cases of Cadaver (Brain dead) organ donations have taken place and expected that the number would increase if the doctors & people are aware of the subject. He said organ donation is the highest service to mankind.

Earlier Dr. Wankhede was felicitated by offering a shawl and memento. Present on the occasion were Mr. Sumant Upare, Dr. Yuvraj Meshram, Prof. Dhanraj Khanorkar, Mr. Rahul Sontakke, NCC Officers and NSS in-charges.
