Masterclass on Motivation and Stress Management - Week 2

MOHAN Foundation organized its 2nd session of the four weekend CME on Counseling at 2.30 pm, may 29 2010. The topic of the second session was Motivation and Stress Management, Mrs Chandini Srinivasan, expert faculty for MOHAN Foundation was the resource person. There were about fifteen participants from various fields like Psychology, psychotherapy, psychiatry etc.

 

The session started with a small presentation by MOHAN Foundation’s Transplant coordinator Miss. Veena, on brain death and organ donation. The presentation gave us all a good insight and a better understanding of brain death and organ donation. The presentation ended with some discussion on the Acts passed by the state and central government regarding brain death and organ donation.

 

Ms.Chandni Srinivasan started her talk by recollecting various points and concepts from the previous CME on counseling, she enabled the participants to recollect the concepts of ID EGO and SUPER EGO etc so in as to enable the participants to have a clear perspective of what they are going to discuss today. Ms Chandini discussed about the various types of personality ranging from, Border line personality, anti social personality, Paranoid personality, Schizoid personality etc. she also explained in detail about the five broad domain of personality used to describe human personality. The five domains are,

Openness                    - appreciation of art, emotion, adventurous, curiosity etc

Conscientiousness    - Self discipline, dutiful, aims for achievement

Extraversion               - Assurgency, seek stimulation,

Agreeableness           - Compassionate, cooperative, suspicious, antagonist

Neuroticism               - Anger, anxiety, depression

 

Ms.Chandni also explained that each domain constitute many traits in itself which can be attributed to human personality and traits. Through this one can identify a person’s personality according to the traits he possesses. She also explained that the way in which one reacts to a situation also explains his or her personality. The session closed for tea break and reorganized for another session.

In this session Ms.Chandni discussed about Abraham Maslow’s theory of Self Actualization. According to Maslow, there is a hierarchy in human needs and he has classified it accordingly to their needs such as Physiological needs Safety needs, Love/Belongingness, Esteem, and Self actualization in a pyramidal structure. According to him, only when the needs at the base like physiological and safety needs are met and taken care of will he reach towards the higher needs towards the peak of the pyramid. Each stage of need has to be satisfied for him to look up or crave and thus attempt to achieve the next stage.

Some examples of people who have successfully reached the self actualization stage are Abraham Lincoln, Roosevelt, and Albert Einstein.

 

Lastly Ms.Chandni shared some of the case studies that she had collected from various sources, which were all very thought provoking.
