A guest lecture by Sqn Ldr Dr Ravi Wankhede was organized by Department of Anatomy, Dr D Y Patil Medical College and Research Center on 2nd Dec 2014. Dr Ravi Wankhede is the Director of MOHAN Foundation, Nagpur Center, an organization responsible for changing the face of Organ donation in Southern India. Dr. P. Vatsalaswamy, Head of Department of Anatomy, introduced Dr. Wankhede, describing him as a brave man who is dedicated to the cause of Organ Donation. She stated that she could not possibly read out all the awards he has received as there are so many. The topic of the lecture was “Organ donation and its necessity”. In today's scenario in India where the rate of Organ donation is very poor, this was a very relevant talk.
During the morning session, Dr. Wankhede spoke at length on necessity of Organ donation with the 1st year medical students followed by a very lively discussion with the young medicos where he clarified their doubts regarding this topic. Miss Pallavi Singh, a 1st year Medical student had prepared a poster on Organ donation for which Dr. Wankhede congratulated her. Another 1st year Medical student, Atharva Sule later came and spoke with Dr Wankhede on the issue of Donor Cards.
The afternoon session consisted of a lecture by Dr Wankhede addressing the Faculty of the Medical College. Here too he clarified doubts and encouraged all to speak with patients on issues like eye, skin and organ donations. One Faculty member Dr. N. Borade, Head of Department of Physiology was so inspired by his talk that she promptly filled the organ donation form and was issued a “Donor card” by Dr. R. Wankhede. Dr. V. Arole, Professor from Department of Anatomy while proposing the vote of thanks, also expressed her wishes to be an organ donor.
