CME on “Keys to a Successful Cadaveric Donor Transplant System” by Dr Chris Barry at Hotel Leela, Gurgaon

On January 24, 2014 MOHAN Foundation organized a CME for Transplant Coordinators from various government and private hospitals in Delhi-NCR at The Leela, Gurgaon. The special speaker for the day was Dr. Christopher Taylor Barry, Associate Professor of Transplant and Hepatobiliary Surgery at the University of Rochester Medical Center, New York who spoke on, “Keys to a Successful Cadaveric Donor Transplant System”

 

Ms Pallavi Kumar (Executive Director MOHAN Foundation, Delhi NCR) welcomed the participants. She stressed on the importance of passion and commitment in order to motivate the families in difficult times and the urgency to work together as a group to carry forward the cause of Organ Donation. She also engaged the audience by involving them in an ice breaking session where they  introduced themselves and shared their ideas on taking the cause ahead.

 

Ms Lalitha Raghuram (Country Director, MOHAN Foundation) spoke about the relevance of MOHAN Foundation and similar organizations in the national agenda of Deceased Organ Donation.” She expanded the vision and conducted a collective SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats) exercise of the Deceased Donation Program in Delhi-NCR where participants offered their views on the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats of the program. Ms Raghuram also gave examples of experiences in Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh.

 

Dr. Christopher Taylor Barry- Associate Professor of Transplant and Hepatobiliary Surgery, the University of Rochester Medical Center, New York, who elaborated on the relevance of Social Media and the vast possibilities in regard to the Transplantation model here in India. He also gave a detailed presentation on “Keys to a Successful Cadaveric Donor Transplant System” where in the Transplant systems across the globe was analyzed. Dr Barry also strongly advocated online communities like TED, Facebook, Pintrest, Tumbler and the power of reaching out to millions by such economic as well as efficient communication portals.

 

The talk was concluded by Ms Raghuram with the analysis of the SWOT and clear objectives were presented to the group of co-ordinators present. Dr Barry was in agreement with most of the issues discussed and assured his full support. There was a donor sign up activity to sign off the session where 19 people took the donor card home.

 

32 Transplant Coordinators attended the talk  from various hospitals such as Fortis Escorts, BLK Superspeciality, Indraprastha Apollo, Medanta Medicity, St. Stephens Hospital, RML Hospital, Artemis, Amit Gupta Foundation, Parashar Foundation and Columbia Asia.
