Organ Donation Awareness Session at Jerusalem College of Engineering, Chennai

March 11, 2025 marked a significant outreach initiative by MOHAN Foundation, aimed at fostering organ donation awareness among the students of  biomedical engineering of Jerusalem College of Engineering, located in Pallikaranai, Vellachery. The MOHAN Foundation team, comprising Dr. Hemal Kanvinde, Quality Assurance Officer; Mr Ganesh C, Marketing Coordinator; and Ms Anood, an intern, from Prasanna School of Public Health, MAHE Manipal, were warmly received by Professor Nivedha from the Biomedical Engineering Department. The college extended exceptional hospitality, creating a welcoming atmosphere for the event. The session commenced at 10:33 AM with an introduction of Dr. Hemal Kanvinde by Assistant Professor Sofia. Around 60 students prticipated in the session.

Dr. Kanvinde initiated the session by providing an overview of MOHAN Foundation's mission and activities, setting the stage for Ganesh's presentation. Ganesh then took over, delivering an engaging and informative presentation on organ donation. He covered various aspects, including the organs that can be donated, the different types of organ donation (living and deceased), and even referenced Tamil movies that have addressed the subject, making the topic relatable to the students. Ganesh's interactive style fostered a lively discussion, with students actively participating and posing insightful questions, demonstrating their genuine interest and comprehension.Following Ganesh, Mr Vashok, a grief counselor from Shankar Nethralaya delivered a comprehensive session on eye donation. He discussed the intricacies of eye banking, the chemical preservation processes, and other essential aspects of eye donation. This session was equally informative, prompting further questions from both students and a professor, highlighting the depth of their engagement.

To further solidify the students' understanding and encourage practical application, Dr. Kanvinde divided the students into seven groups – three groups of boys and four groups of girls. They were tasked with conducting a survey on organ donation awareness among people outside the campus using the MOHAN Foundation website. Additionally, each group was required to create a short video explaining the basics of organ donation, incorporating the "5 W's and 1 H" (Who, What, When, Where, Why, and How) framework. The students diligently worked on their assignments, returning to the session at 12:50 PM. Dr. Kanvinde then engaged with the group leaders, soliciting feedback on their experiences. The students reported that while awareness within the campus was relatively high, they felt that conducting the survey outside the college would provide a more accurate representation of public understanding. They expressed a desire for more time to conduct a more thorough external survey. As a token of appreciation, the leaders were given small gifts for their participation.

Dr. Kanvinde then delivered a detailed presentation on how the youth can promote this cause. She gave examples of Internships and Angels of Change  programs of MOHAN Foundation.  Showcasing  the work of different ambassadors, she highlighted the significant of their work. The session culminated in an engaging and educational online quiz, utilizing the Kahoot platform. The quiz focused on key aspects of tissue donation. The five students with the highest scores were awarded gifts and participated in a group photograph in front of the selfie booth. The Department of Biomed technology team concluded the session with heartfelt thank-you notes to the students and faculty. Jerusalem College of Engineering also presented the MOHAN Foundation team members with individual letters of appreciation, acknowledging their valuable contribution. The event was a resounding success, laying a strong foundation for continued organ donation awareness initiatives at Jerusalem College of Engineering.
