Sensitization Session at the Department of Paediatrics, Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Imphal

On February 28, 2025, the MOHAN Foundation conducted a sensitization session on body, organ, and eye donation at the Department of Paediatrics, Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Imphal. The session was led by Ms. Laishram Monica Devi, Programme Officer, MOHAN Foundation.

 

The session was organized with the approval of Prof. Sanjib Singh Nepram, Medical Superintendent of RIMS, and Dr. Ch. Shyamsunder Singh, Professor & Head, Department of Paediatrics, RIMS. Ms. Chongtham Pritam, a Medical Social Worker involved in renal transplant coordination at RIMS, played a key role in ensuring its smooth execution and active participation. The session was attended by both teaching faculty and non-teaching staff.

 

Ms. Pritam opened the session by emphasizing the importance of health professionals understanding organ donation and its life-saving impact. She encouraged the attendees to support the cause and spread awareness within the community. Ms. Monica Devi then introduced the MOHAN Foundation, outlining its objectives and mission to promote organ donation in society.

 

The session covered several key topics, supported by a PowerPoint presentation:

• The impact of organ failure on society.

• The development of the living donor renal transplant program at RIMS.

• Types of organ donation and donor eligibility criteria.

• The status of organ donation in India and Manipur.

• Advances in organ transplantation, including hand transplants.

• Common myths and facts about organ donation.

• Differences between circulatory death, brain death, and coma.

• Stories of paediatric body donations in India.

• Steps to pledge or register for organ donation.

 

Following the session, Dr. Shyamsunder shared his thoughts on recent news about organ donation in Imphal, calling it a noble act. He also appreciated Ms. Monica and Ms. Pritam for their informative and engaging session.

 

The session concluded with a Q&A segment, where Ms. Monica addressed participants' queries and clarified their doubts.

 

Nearly 30 participants attended the session, actively engaging with the discussions. Inspired by the session, three participants pledged their organs through the NOTTO website.
