Organ Donation awareness at Rajiv Gandhi National Institute of Youth Development, Sriperumbudur |
On February 26, 2025 MOHAN Foundation got an opportunity to speak to students of the Rajiv Gandhi National Institute of Youth Development, Sriperumbudur. Around 80 students studying Masters of Social Work and Applied Psychology and the teaching staff gathered in the seminar hall to understand the concept of Organ donation and Transplantation. It was organized by ASWIDE - Association of Social work Innovation, Development and Empowerment.
MOHAN Foundation was represented by Dr Hemal Kanvinde, Quality Assurance Officer, Ms Yamini, Project officer and Ms Lavanya, Volunteer and ABT practitioner. The event started with welcome speech given by Dr S. Kumarvel, HOD of the Department of Social Work. This was followed by a short film depicting post transplant gratitude of a recipient showing how she has benefited from the donation of an organ by an unknown person
Dr Hemal started her talk with concepts on Organ Donation and explained the wide gap between demand and availability of organs. She explained the statistics, patient listing, what can be donated, how it can be donated and when organ donation and tissue donation can happen. She also touched up on organ whole body donation and skin donation.
She elaborated on of how to become an organ donor and take a donor card and how patients can receive organs. She gave examples of community engagement to sensitize positively towards organ donation.
The students enacted 3 case scenarios on grief counselling with relation to eye donation. The whole audience appreciated the role plays that brought out the sensitivity needed for counseling. Foundation thanked the students by giving them small badges in appreciation of there interest in promoting the cause.
Two staff from Saint Gobain also attended the session and promise to support the cause in their own factory. Discussion after the session was on procedures to get a deceased donor organs and the costs of surgeries. Ms Lavanya summed up the discussion and the role play with a note that though people do great things due to their education and skills and hard work, Organ Donation is just to say yes beacuse you are Human.
