MOHAN Foundation and JNIMS Conduct Awareness Session on Organ Donation

On January 17, 2025, MOHAN Foundation, in collaboration with Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS), organized an awareness session on organ donation. The session was held in the Conference Hall at JNIMS, Porompat, and was attended by nursing students undergoing clinical practice, along with their faculty members. Ms. Laishram Monica Devi, Programme Officer, served as the session's key speaker.

The initiative was conducted with prior approval from the Medical Superintendent and the Deputy Nursing Superintendent of JNIMS. Mr. Gailian Kamei, Transplant Coordinator at JNIMS, played a key role in coordinating the session.

Ms. Monica began by assessing the students' existing knowledge of organ donation and transplantation. She then introduced MOHAN Foundation, its mission, objectives, and vision, setting the stage for an engaging discussion.

Using a detailed PowerPoint presentation, Ms. Monica covered the following key topics:

• The need for organ donation

• Types of organ donations

• The status of organ donation and transplant waiting lists in India

• Legal frameworks governing transplantation

• Circulatory death vs. brain death

• Stories of deceased donations in Manipur

• Facts and myths surrounding organ donation

• The significance of the donor card

• The critical role of family consent in organ donation

• Steps to pledge or sign up for organ donation

• Professional courses offered by MOHAN Foundation

The students were also briefed about the development of the kidney transplant program at JNIMS, a government-run hospital. This highlighted the positive strides being made in the state of Manipur and emphasized the growing need for organ transplants due to the increasing prevalence of end-stage organ diseases.

To further enhance understanding, FAQs on organ donation were distributed to participants.

At the conclusion of the session, several participants expressed interest in pledging their organs. While 13 individuals made immediate pledges, others opted to discuss the matter with their families and friends.

The session witnessed an impressive turnout, with close to 190 participants in attendance.
