Awareness Talk on Organ Donation at Traffic Police Headquarters, Todapur, New Delhi

On January 17, 2025, MOHAN Foundation (MF) conducted an awareness session on organ donation for traffic police personnel at the Traffic Police Headquarters, Todapur, New Delhi. The session was facilitated by Ms. Simran Anand, Programme Officer, MOHAN Foundation NCR, with support from Ms. Sanya Santosh, also a Programme Officer at MOHAN Foundation NCR.

 

Ms. Simran commenced the session by introducing the MOHAN Foundation and explaining the concept of a "Green Corridor," highlighting the crucial role traffic police officers play in its execution. She provided an overview of organ donation in India and delivered an insightful presentation on the fundamentals of organ donation and transplantation.

 

To help participants understand "brain death," a brief and informative film was shown. Ms. Simran elaborated on the steps involved in certifying brain death and emphasized its legal implications.

 

Key topics covered during the session included:

• The concept and societal importance of organ donation

• Eligibility criteria for becoming an organ donor

• Differences between living and deceased donors

• Organs that can be donated during life and after death

• Understanding brain death

• Eye donation and guidelines for preserving the cornea after death

• Overview of the Transplantation of Human Organs Act, 1994

• The role of MOHAN Foundation in promoting organ donation

• Ways individuals can contribute to the cause

• Common myths and facts about organ donation

• The distinction between coma and brain death

 

Ms. Simran addressed a prevalent myth about organ retrieval during the COVID-19 pandemic. She clarified that organs cannot be donated after natural death and that COVID-19 was a contraindication for organ donation due to its status as a communicable disease.

 

She also highlighted two primary causes of increased organ failure in India: hypertension and diabetes. Additionally, she noted that India ranks second globally in living organ donation and transplantation.

 

The session was attended by approximately 40 participants.
