On December 19, 2024 the session began with Ms. Jaya introducing Dr. Uma Ali, who started her presentation with a poignant analogy. She showed a slide depicting two sides: one where a boy stood in a barren, desolate place, and another where sunshine, greenery, and happiness prevailed. Dr. Uma explained that the family was afraid to cross the bridge to reach the happier, more hopeful side. She emphasized that the counselor’s role is to help build a bridge from uncertainty and fear to hope and reality, offering families a chance at a better, happier life. Throughout the session, Dr. Uma Ali covered several crucial aspects of pediatric transplant counseling, including the medical, practical, emotional, logistic, and financial considerations. She also highlighted the basic knowledge required for a counselor before engaging in such sensitive discussions. The session further addressed common conditions in children that lead to kidney failure, the pros and cons of dialysis as a treatment option, and the delicate process of counseling regarding deceased donation.
