Awareness Sessions at the College of Nursing, Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Imphal

On December 3 and 4, 2024, MOHAN Foundation conducted awareness sessions on body, organ, and eye donation at the College of Nursing, Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Imphal. The sessions were led by Ms. Laishram Monica Devi, Programme Officer, MOHAN Foundation.

 

The sessions were organized with the approval of Prof. Sanjib Singh Nepram, Medical Superintendent of RIMS, and the Principal of the College of Nursing at RIMS. Ms. Chongtham Pritam, a Medical Social Worker involved in renal transplant coordination at RIMS, facilitated smooth execution and ensured active participation. The first session was held for the teaching faculty of the College of Nursing, while the second session was conducted for the students.

 

Ms. Monica Devi began each session by introducing MOHAN Foundation and explaining its objectives and mission to promote organ donation in society.

 

The sessions featured a PowerPoint presentation highlighting:

• Types of organ donation and eligibility criteria for donors

• The status of organ donation in India and Manipur

• Common myths and facts about organ donation

• Differences between circulatory death, brain death, and coma

• The importance of the donor card

• Steps to pledge or register for organ donation

• Advances in organ transplantation, including hand transplants

 

During the second session, Principal and Professor of the College of Nursing, RIMS, Imphal, H. Jamuna Devi, expressed appreciation for the informative session. She emphasized its relevance for healthcare workers and students, highlighting the importance of understanding transplant science in today’s context. She actively participated in the second session and encouraged students to share the knowledge with friends and families.

 

The sessions were highly interactive, with participants posing various questions, including:

• The minimum age for being an organ donor

• The viability of organs after retrieval

• Alternatives if a donor’s family consents but the donation process cannot proceed due to medical complications

 

A total of nearly 83 participants attended the two sessions, actively engaging and gaining valuable insights into organ donation.
