On August 7, 2024, MOHAN Foundation Ambassador Mr. Devang Chhaya delivered an in-depth lecture on the "Legal Aspects of Organ Donation in India" for the Certificate Course in Organ Donation and Transplant Coordination at Tirpude College of Social Work, Nagpur. The session was organized by College Principal Dr. Swati Dharmadhikari and Lecturer Ms. Prachi Shirsath. Mr. Chhaya's lecture provided a comprehensive overview of the legal framework governing organ donation and transplantation in India. He began with an introduction to the Transplantation of Human Organs and Tissues Act (THOTA), 1994, and its subsequent amendments. He emphasized key provisions of the act that regulate the removal, storage, and transplantation of human organs and tissues, while also addressing the prohibition of commercial transactions involving human organs. The session highlighted various ethical considerations in organ donation, including the importance of informed consent, confidentiality, and ensuring that donations are voluntary and altruistic. Mr. Chhaya discussed the role of ethics committees in the transplantation process and the necessity of upholding high ethical standards. Dr. Chhaya also elaborated on the regulations and guidelines that healthcare professionals and institutions must adhere to during organ transplant procedures. He provided detailed explanations of the roles of the Authorization Committee and the Appropriate Authority in maintaining compliance with the legal framework. Additionally, Mr. Chhaya addressed common legal challenges and disputes related to organ donation and transplantation, such as issues of consent, organ trafficking, and misuse of medical technology. He underscored the importance of having robust legal mechanisms to effectively tackle these challenges. The lecture was attended by approximately 20 students specializing in Medical and Psychiatric Social Work, who gained valuable insights into the legal aspects of organ donation and transplantation.
