Ms. Pallavi Kumar Invited as Speaker to Organ Donation Webinar Titled "Don’t Leave Your Loved Ones in Doubt! #LeaveNoDoubt" Organized by FICCI Health Services

On August 13, 2024, Ms. Pallavi Kumar, Executive Director of MOHAN Foundation (MF), NCR, was invited to speak at an online webinar titled "Don’t Leave Your Loved Ones in Doubt! #LeaveNoDoubt." The event, focusing on "Organ Donation: Creating Awareness, Changing Mindsets," was jointly organized by the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) Health Services, the Association of Healthcare Providers India (AHPI), and the Association of Indian Manufacturers of Medical Devices (AIMED).

 

Ms. Kumar was introduced by Dr. Sanjeev Singh, Co-Chair of the FICCI Health Services Committee, Medical Director of Amrita Institute, Faridabad, and Chief Medical Superintendent of Amrita Institute, Kochi.

 

The webinar covered several key topics, including the National Action Plan and future roadmap, challenges and goals for 2047, and various types of transplants such as liver, kidney, hand, and heart transplants. Ms. Kumar led a session that focused on creating awareness and changing mindsets around organ donation. She began by outlining the current status of deceased organ donation rates in India.

 

Her session covered a comprehensive range of topics, including:

• An overview of organ donation

• Types of organs that can be donated both during life and after death

• Understanding brain stem death and the process of its determination

• Causes of brain stem death

• Contraindications to organ donation

• Eye donation and precautions for preserving corneas

• The legal framework under the Transplantation of Human Organs and Tissues Act, 1994

• The role of the MOHAN Foundation in promoting organ donation

• The importance of individual and public involvement in raising awareness

• Myths and facts about organ donation

 

Ms. Kumar highlighted that 95% of the transplants performed in India are living transplants. She also stressed that the majority of brain death cases result from road traffic accidents (RTA), emphasizing the importance of wearing helmets as a precaution.

 

She also shared a personal experience, recounting how she consented to donate her father, Mr. Rajendra Kumar’s, corneas after his death in 2018, noting that corneal donation is a simple procedure that takes only 15-20 minutes. She underscored the significance of family consent for organ and tissue donation and used the platform to introduce the MOHAN Foundation's Ambassador Program.

 

The webinar attracted close to 130 participants.
