MOHAN Foundation conducts an Awareness Program at Arulmigu Meenakshi College of Nursing

On August 14, 2024, 1^st year students and faculty of Nursing, Arulmigu Meenakshi College of Nursing, Kanchipuram participated in an awareness programme organ donation. Ms Arshiya Fathima, Helpline (counselor & CEE), Mr. Bharath Sri & Ms. Divya (MSSW Interns) of MOHAN Foundation conducted the session. The seminar was organized f to celebrate World Organ Donation Day. A total of 100 students and faculty attended the session. Mr. Bharath and Ms. Divya distributed information brochures and green ribbons.

The program started with a welcome address and speaker introduction by 2^nd year student. Ms. Arshiya Fathima began her talk with an introduction to the activities of MOHAN Foundation followed by on Concept of Organ Donation. She explained why, what, when and how organ donation can be done. She spoke of the law, offenses and punishments under the Act. She explained the basics of Brain Death and its difference from coma. She dispelled myths on organ donation and narrated a donor story. The talk ended with the screening of a film on brain stem death.

The discussion points after the session were:

Is there any system or regulation that shows the transparency of allocation of organs?
Is consent required from family members in case of living donation?
After multiple organ donation, can the body be donated to the anatomy department?

Ms Arshiya conducted a fun quiz session. Students actively engaged in the session and answered questions. They enjoyed the session. A short video of a heart transplant recipient was screened after the quiz. Mrs Arshiya gave an account of the courses offered by MOHAN Foundation to improve the career prospects of nursing students.

After the session, the students enacted a skit on organ donation. It was very informative to others. This was followed by a panel discussion on deceased organ donation and ethical issues in organ donation moderated by the faculty.
