Organ Donation Awareness talk at St. Anne’s Church, Para, Goa |
On August 3, 2024, Mr. Gabriel Pereira from the MOHAN Foundation was invited by the parish priest of St. Anne’s Church in Para, Goa, to lead an organ donation awareness session for the Parish Pastoral Council (PPC).
The PPC is a representative body of the various areas, groups, and organizations within the parish. It also coordinates parish services and activities through different ministries and support groups. The president of the PPC is the Parish Priest.
During the session, Gabriel discussed the MOHAN Foundation, explaining that MOHAN stands for Multi-organ Harvesting Aid Network, which is based in Chennai and operates from Mapusa. He emphasized the importance of organ donation with a PowerPoint presentation, describing organ failure as a silent tsunami that devastates people's lives. He encouraged routine check-ups for individuals with a history of kidney diseases, obesity, diabetes, hypertension, or other lifestyle-related issues.
Furthermore, he talked about the different types of donors, including living donors and brain stem death donors, and detailed the process of organ retrieval, transportation, and transplantation. He explained the allocation process and engaged the members in a discussion about transplant hospitals and the types of organs or tissues transplanted in Goa.
At the end of the session, the parish priest, Fr. Peter Da Gama, expressed his gratitude to Mr. Gabriel for conducting the informative talk on organ donation.
