On July 22, 2024, an informative organ donation stall was set up at the Patient Registration OPD area of Lata Mangeshkar Medical College & Hospital, Digdo Hingna, Nagpur. This initiative was organized by Dr. Kajal Mitra, Dean of NKP Salve Institute of Medical Science Research Center & Lata Mangeshkar Hospital, who invited Mr. Behera, Transplant Coordinator of the MOHAN Foundation, to lead the event. The stall featured a variety of materials, including consent forms, donor cards, standees, and banners. Mr. Behera provided visitors with comprehensive information on various aspects of organ donation. He explained what constitutes an organ and who is eligible to donate. The stall covered all the information regarding organ donation, the different types of death, including brain death and natural death, and detailed which organs and tissues can be donated in each case. He clarified the differences between organs and tissues, the age limits for donation, and the processes involved in eye and body donation, as well as live and cadaver transplants. Additionally, Mr. Behera discussed the regulations under the Organ Transplant Act of 1994 and the roles of NOTTO, ROTTO, SOTTO, and ZTCC in the donation process. He also highlighted the importance of donor cards and helplines and the role of the MOHAN Foundation in promoting organ donation. Visitors had the opportunity to ask questions, and Mr. Behera addressed inquiries about the documents required for kidney transplant registration, government schemes for organ transplants, the life span of patients post-transplant, and the differences between coma and brain death. Approximately 30 visitors attended the stall, with 2 individuals signing up for organ donation. The event was a significant step in raising awareness about organ donation. Dr. Kajal Mitra’s support in providing space for the stall was instrumental in facilitating this important outreach.
