Webinar on Deceased Organ Donation for nursing students of Sri Ramachandra Institute of Higher Education and Research

  •   On Monday, 7th February 2022, the Sri Ramachandra Faculty of Nursing, Sri Ramachandra Institute of Higher Education and Research (Deemed to be University), Porur, Chennai and MOHAN Foundation, Chennai organized  a webinar on Deceased Organ Donation.  31 students  of 3rd year B.Sc. Nursing, 1st year Post Basic B.Sc. Nursing  and MSc nursing students attended the webinar.  The faculty for the webinar was from MOHAN Foundation and Govt. Stanley Medical College Hospital.

         The webinar on Deceased Organ Donation was commenced by Dr. A. Porkodi, Reader and HoD, Department of Medical Surgical Nursing, with a welcome address and introduction of the speakers. A detailed presentation on Deceased Organ Donation-Concepts was given by Dr. Hemal Kanvinde, Quality Assurance Officer, MOHAN Foundation. She elucidated the concepts of Deceased Organ donation, organs and tissues that can be donated after Brain Stem death and pledging organs. She also spoke of the steps for a successful donation in a hospital. The talk ended witha video of the recipient speaking about her life after transplant. 

    This was followed by  a brief presentation on “Transplant Coordinator as a Career” by Mr. Ganesh, Marketing Executive, MOHAN Foundation, Chennai. He spoke of the role of a Transplant Coordinator and the training available to take up Transplant coordination as a  career.    

    The next session was on Brain death - Certification and Donor Maintenance  and was conducted by Dr. Kanimozhi R, Assistant Professor in Anaesthesiology, Government Stanley Medical College, Chennai. She enlightened the concepts, legal aspects, and the important role of nurses in  early identification of a prospective donor. She explained the  TN Government Order and the process of Brain Death Certification.  She explained in detail the Apnoea test as a confirmatory test in brain death determination. She also gave  practical examples of maintenance of a brain dead donor and the care and vigilance needed so that the generosity of the family does not go to waste. 

         A session on Q&A was started. Students questioned about how to pledge organs, any specialized training for donor maintenance and ethical aspects in Brain Death Certification, which were answered by the respective speakers.

         The seminar concluded with a vote of thanks by Mrs. K. Kavitha, Lecturer, Department of Medical Surgical Nursing and Dr. A. Manjula, Department of Medical Surgical Nursing, Sri Ramachandra Faculty of Nursing, Porur, Chennai.
