On 25th Aug 2018, MOHAN Foundation Mumbai was invited by Principal of Somaiya Nursing College, Mrs. Avani Oke and its professor, Mrs. Jovita John for conducting 2nd ‘Angels of Change’ volunteer training workshop for their nursing students.
Mrs. Jaya Jairam and Mrs. Jigisha Yadav conducted the workshop for the 37 students. Mrs. Jaya Jairam started off with what are the expectations from them as volunteers. The students then played a mind mapping game. The concepts of organ donation, brain death, circulatory death, which organs and tissues can be donated, etc. were covered by Mrs. Jaya Jairam. Brain death video and videos of heart transplant were shown.
Mrs. Jigisha went on to cover the myths and facts in organ donation. A few inspiring videos of organ donation were also shown. The students then wrote a thank you letter to the donor family. Thereafter an Organ Donation Pathway game was played. There were given 4 inspiring donor stories of which they had to share their views on which they liked the most and why.
Donor stories and Recipient stories were shown in the form of videos. Mrs. Jaya Jairam shared her story of kidney failure and how she could come out of it thanks to her mother who donated to her a kidney. Many students were emotional after this session.
Movie ‘Phir Zindagi’ on organ donation was shown. The students were then invited to share their ideas on how they would present and where they would put this knowledge to use. Lastly, organ donation survey forms were shared with the students so that they could conduct the survey themselves and share the findings of the survey.
The students were an extremely motivated batch and have made excellent plans to spread awareness and participate in MOHAN Foundation’s activities.
We are grateful to Mrs. Avani Oke and Ms. Jovita John for their staunch support to the cause of organ donation. We have been invited to conduct the 3rd workshop on 7th of September for another batch of nursing students.
