On August 26, 2015 MOHAN Foundation was invited to Asian Institute of Medical Sciences, Faridabad to speak on how a hospital can set up a deceased donation program. The session was conducted on the request of Dr Mukesh Goel (Cardiovascular & General Surgeon) who organized and coordinated the same.
Asian Institute of Medical Sciences is one of the upcoming hospitals in Delhi-NCR region. It is a 350 bed super specialty tertiary care neoteric hospital. They are currently performing live kidney transplants and are in the process of starting a cardiac transplant program.
The main objective of this session was to understand what preparation is required to initiate the implementation of a Deceased Organ Donation Program in their hospital.
The presentation by Ms. Pallavi Kumar focused on the essential ingredients of a successful deceased donation program in hospitals. She spoke about the need for the program to be driven and owned by the management and stressed the need for inter-department coordination. She also emphasized the role of the transplant coordinator in this whole program and how he/she should be empowered so that this program succeeds. She also explained what all procedures and protocols are involved, how to register for brain death committee, who all should constitute it, its role. Further, she stressed
upon the importance of spreading awareness amongst the general masses and the unwavering commitment required on the part of the hospital to make this program a success.
Senior Consultants, Heads of Departments and representatives from the Management attended the session. There was representation of departments such as cardiology, intensive care, neurology, neuro surgery, anesthesia, urology, nephrology etc. Approximately 40 people were present for the talk.
Intense discussion followed the presentation and the doctors present asked various questions to clarify their doubts.
