Sensitization Session on Organ Donation and Transplantation at the Department of Forensic Medicine and Toxicology, Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Imphal

  • On February 17, 2025, MOHAN Foundation conducted sensitization sessions on organ donation and transplantation at the Department of Forensic Medicine and Toxicology, Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Imphal. The session was led by Ms. Laishram Monica Devi, Programme Officer, MOHAN Foundation.

     

    The event was organized with the approval of Prof. Sanjib Singh Nepram, Medical Superintendent of RIMS, and Dr. Memchoubi Phanjoubam, Professor and Head of the Department of Forensic Medicine and Toxicology at RIMS. Ms. Chongtham Pritam, a Medical Social Worker involved in renal transplant coordination at RIMS, coordinated the session. The session was designed for the teaching faculty, non-teaching faculty, and medical students of the department.

     

    Ms. Pritam opened the session by emphasizing the importance of organ donation awareness among healthcare professionals. She warmly welcomed Ms. Monica Devi, inviting her to share valuable insights with the participants.

     

    Ms. Monica Devi introduced MOHAN Foundation, detailing its mission and objectives to promote organ donation in society.

     

    The session featured an informative PowerPoint presentation that covered key topics, including:

    • Types of organ donation and eligibility criteria for donors

    • The status of organ donation in India and Manipur

    • Common myths and facts about organ donation

    • Differences between circulatory death, brain death, and coma

    • The importance of the donor card

    • Steps to pledge or register for organ donation

    • Advances in organ transplantation, including hand transplants

     

    Ms. Monica encouraged the department to share this information with their friends and families, further extending organ donation awareness. A set of Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) was also distributed.

     

    After the session, Dr. Memchoubi Phanjoubam and Dr. Th. Meera, Dean of Academics, RIMS, appreciated Ms. Monica and Ms. Pritam for the much-needed session and discussed the role of forensic medicine in medico-legal cases.

     

    The session saw close to 40 participants, who actively engaged in discussions and gained valuable insights into organ donation and transplantation
