On 2nd July 2016 the second awareness session on organ donation was conducted at Rajiv Gandhi Cancer Institute & Research Centre, Rohini, New Delhi. The first session was held on 29th June 2016 as part of an orientation on organ donation for doctors, nurses and paramedical staff within the hospital.
Dr. Sushma Bhat, Manager Operations cum Transplant Coordinator organized and coordinated the session with a total of 27 nurses from the Surgical ICU, OT and few senior nursing staff from the administration.
Dr. Muneet began the session by introducing basic concepts of organ donation and transplantation. The main focus of the talk was on the role of nurses in supporting families through the organ and tissue request process and maintenance of the brain dead potential donor. She also emphasized on the key elements the nurses play in obtaining the organs and tissues for transplantation and maintaining their viability, because the aim of their actions is to optimize the quality of the offered organs, to provide transparency for the donation process, and to ensure the greatest numbers of donors, consequently contributing to the success of the organ transplant programme.
The topics covered during the talk included THO law including the various forms under Transplantation of Human Organs & Tissues Rules 2014, living versus deceased organ donation, brain death (causes, diagnosis & certification) and eye donation.
The talk was very well received with many participants picking up more than one donor card. 35 donor cards were picked up.
