Public Education Session on Organ Donation organised by Durga Pooja Samiti, Rohini Sector 7, Delhi

  • On 13th October, 2013 a public education session on organ donation and transplantation was organised by the Durga Pooja Samiti, Rohini Sector 7, New Delhi. They had invited MOHAN Foundation, Delhi-NCR to conduct the session. Mr. Amit Kumar, Project Manager and Dr. Sourabh Sharma, Transplant Coordinator represented the Foundation and addressed the gathering.

     

    The Durga Pooja Samiti is a local community which organizes cultural events for residents of the locality. The event was sponsored by State Bank of India and Hindustan Petroleum. At the site where the session was held a free health check-up was also organised and it was sponsored by Jaipur Golden Hospital, Rohini. Further; a few competitions were planned to keep the children engaged.

     

    Mr. Anoop, Coordinator, Durga Pooja Samiti took the initiative to plan and organise the event.

     

    The session covered the following topics: the relevance of organ donation in India; medical and ethical issues involved in organ donation; and the difference between brain death, cardiac death and coma. Mr. Kumar made a concerted effort to encourage people to pledge their organs by signing the donor card.



    45 people attended the hour long session and 24 participants picked up the donor card. Many of them wished to discuss with their families before pledging their organs. A few cards were left with the organisers for those who were interested to collect it after making up their mind.
