An Organ donation awareness session was conducted for nursing students of the Madras Medical Mission College of Nursing. This program was held at MMM Hospital auditorium and was attended by around 150 students and 10 staff. Dr. Hemal Kanvinde (Quality Assurance Officer) and Ms. Arshiya Fathima H (Helpline Counselor) were the resource persons for the program. Ms. Prathyusha. K, intern from MMM College of Health Sciences was responsible for the local logistics.
The program started with prayer song and scripture reading. Dr. Rosalin Rachel, Principal of Madras Medical Mission College of Nursing (MMMCON) delivered the welcome speech and felicitation of guests. She spoke about the work of MOHAN Foundation and introduced the guest speakers to audience.
The session started with Dr. Hemal Kanvinde delivering a talk on the Concepts of Organ Donation. Her presentation included topics such as need for organ donation, time factor for transplantation, registration process for being a organ donor and much more. Concepts of brain death was explained though video.
Ms. Arshiya Fathima conducted quiz on voluntary body donation, skin and blood donation. The students were divided into 20 groups, and participated with enthusiasm. Winners and runners were given with chocolates and organ donor wrist bands as a gift.
The next session was on Protocols for Successful Organ Donation. Dr. Hemal Kanvinde explained the protocol through a 10 steps protocol and flashcards. Students took up a flash card and represented their role in a deceased organ donation. This made students clear about complexity of a donation and the need for cooperation.
Finally, Ms. Sasi Mohan, Assistant Professor delivered the vote of thanks and ended the session with the National Anthem.
