Organ Donation Awareness talk for nursing students of Kasturba Gandhi Hospital

  • Ms. Sunitha and Mr. Prakash Transplant Coordinators, MOHAN Foundation organized an Awareness programme on 6th November 2013 for the 2nd year nursing students Kasturba Gandhi Hospital who were placed in RGGGH for a two month training. Totally 55 students participated in the awareness programme.

     

    The session started with the survey on Awareness & Attitude about organ donation.  Later, Ms. Kavitha Marketing Manager, MOHAN Foundation explained about the concept of organ donation, myths about organ donation, who can be a donor, what is Natural/cardiac Death, Brain Death, Early identification and certification, difference  between Brain death and Coma, organs and the tissues that can be donated after Brain Death. All the students were really inspired by the talk.

     

    She also highlighted the nurse’s role in identifying and maintaining the potential brain dead donor. Some points she covered were:

    • GCS  < 5
    • Patient in Intensive Care Unit and Ventilator
    • Establishing loss of 'Brainstem reflexes'  at the bedside
    • Maintenance of  Brain Death Patient
    • Apnoea and
    • Grief counseling

     

    She also explained them about the donor card. 55 of them expressed their wish to pledge for the donor card by signing the form.

     

    Mr. Paul Raj State Coordinator, Cadaver Transplant Programme addressed the gathering and explained about the organ allocation and need for organ donation. He mentioned that Tamilnadu plays a major role in organ donation and seen 406 donation from October 2008 to September 2013.

     

    At the end of the day Mr. Prakash  delivered the vote of thanks.

     

    Questions raised by the students:

    Which organ should be transplanted immediately?

    What is the use of Donor Card?

    Can the organs be stored for more than one week and then be transplanted?
