On 21st February 2014 an awareness session on organ donation and transplantation was conducted at the Dharmamurthi Rao Bahadur Calavala Cunnan Chetty’s (DRBCCC) Hindu College for the day college students from the Department of Social Work. The students invited the MOHAN Foundation to conduct a session for the students. The session was held at Seminar Hall, Hindu College.
The session started off with the students sharing their knowledge and views about the issue. After which Ms. Sunitha A. T, Transplant Coordinator, MOHAN Foundation, Chennai explained to them in detail about organ donation; about brain death; the difference between cardiac death, brain death and coma; what organs and tissues can be donated; and importance of a donor card. Also, a short film and a flash presentation on organ donation were screened to further emphasize the importance of pledging ones organs.
After the talk Mr. Jeyabal, Transplant Coordinator conducted a group activity with the students. The students were divided into five groups with 7 members in each and they were assigned a task of conceptualizing and creating posters with the aim of promoting organ donation. They were given 30 minutes to complete the task. 5 creative posters with messages were created and each group presented it to the gathering.
Mr. Anoop from Cadaver Transplant Programme addressed the gathering his presentation motivated the students. At the end of the session Ms. Sunitha spoke to them about the donor card and 55 students came forward to pledge their organs and signed the MOHAN Foundation donor registry form. Totally 70 students and 3 staffs attended the session.
