To commemorate the DHL Global Volunteer Day that falls on 20th September 2019, the DHL Chennai office organised an organ donation awareness and blood donation drive for their employees.
Dr. Hemal Kanvinde, Quality Assurance Officer and Ms R. Juhija, Bio-statistician of MOHAN Foundation were deputed for the session. The room was decorated with a banner, standee, information brochures and green ribbons were distributed to the employees. Around 60 employees attended the session.
Mr. Rajasekhar Sahukar, HR Manager DHL, welcomed MOHAN Foundation and explained the volunteering plan for the employees. Dr. Hemal began the presentation by playing a video of a transplant recipient’s experience sharing, followed by a concept talk on what, how and when of organ donation. Ms. Juhija explained brain death, brain stem death certification and the causes of brain death. The law and organ donation process in a hospital were clarified. Myths related to organ donation and queries were answered during the session.
An employee spoke on how he was motivated by a cousin to donate his father’s corneas. Another spoke on how her family was motivated to pledge to donate their cornea after a visit to an eye hospital. 11 employees registered as organ donors and received their donor cards.
The discussion post the talk was on diabetes and donation, need for open discussion in families about the pledge and patient registration in the transplant waiting list. The session ended with a group photo and a promise to invite MOHAN Foundation for their next family outing day, to educate their families.
