On 28th August 2021, Lions Club of Ponda Midtown organised an event at the Lions Image Building in Goa to spread awareness about organ and tissue donation among the club members. Mr. Gabriel Pereira of MOHAN Foundation, Dr. Amol Mahaldar, State Organ Coordinator of IMA Goa and Dr. Sean D Silva, Corneal Transplant Surgeon were the experts present during the occasion.
Mr. Gabriel made a brief presentation on the concepts of organ donation and spoke about MOHAN Foundation. He also mentioned that he would be always willing to speak at similar events organised in Goa to create awareness about the cause.
Dr. Amol’s presentation on brain death covered the procedure of brain death declaration and the importance of seeking timely consent after the declaration. He also spoke about the many road accidents which happen in Goa every year with involving riders like not wearing helmets, talking on phone while driving etc.
Dr. Sean spoke about how a cornea transplant is carried out, who can donate and how does the retrieval take place.
Dr. Amol and Dr. Sean responded to questions raised by the audience. The process to sign up for organ donation was explained and around 30 people signed up as organ donors from the 100 attendees. MOHAN Foundation appreciates the commitment of the Club.
