Organ Donation Awareness at the National Academy of Direct Taxes

  • Ms. Madhulika Deogoji of the National Academy of Direct Taxes, Nagpur invited Dr. Ravi Wankhede of MOHAN Foundation, Nagpur to deliver a talk on organ donation and transplantation on 16th December 2020.

    Dr. Wankhede made a presentation on organ donation and transplantation which covered the
    following points:

    • A brief history of organ donation and transplantation
    • The process of organ and tissue donation while living and after death
    • Cardiac death and brain death
    • The possibility of a brain-dead person saving the lives of around 8 others as well as helping many others by donating tissues like eyes, skin, bones, etc.
    • The role of NOTTO/ROTTO/SOTTO & ZTCC
    • Lack of awareness about organ donation leads to the shortage of life-saving organs

    Dr. Wankhede also highlighted how organ donation is very common in developed countries, whereas in India a very few people donate organs as they are not aware of organ donation. He said that MOHAN Foundation has been spreading awareness through its various centres across the country.

    After the session, around 25 people signed up to be organ donors and a few others collected information brochures.

    The following are a few questions that were asked:

    • What is the difference between coma and brain death?
    • How would MOHAN Foundation know about my death?

    Ms. Madhulika Deogoji thanked Dr. Ravi Wankhede and the participants as the event came to an end.
