Organ Donation Awareness at Pragati Rajasthani Mahila Mandal, Marwadi Mahila Samiti

  • MOHAN Foundation, Nagpur was invited by Mr. Harish Mantri Executive member of Nagpur Marwadi Mahasabha organized on 29 July 2018 to give a talk on organ donation at Motilal Kela Sabhagruha, Sitabuldi, Nagpur. About 100 members of the organizations were present on the occasion. Office bearers present were Anita Bhaiya, Nikita Bagadi, Veena Kela, Suman Malu, Sarla Somani, Madhu Sarda, Urmila Agrawal, Dr. Abhishek Somani, Harish Mantri, Usha Rathi.

    Dr. Ravi Wankhede Director of MOHAN Foundation, Nagpur gave a presentation on the Organ, Tissue and Body donation. He said man is endowed to serve mankind while and after living. In spite of great progress done by the country there is a deficiency of blood in blood banks, not enough corneas are available in the eye banks and there is also a huge requirement of life saving organs such as kidneys, liver, heart, etc. He said organs can be donated by living donors, but what is more relevant are several organs and tissues can be donated after death, more specifically after brain death. He explained ‘brain death’ and said such a person can help save lives of about 8 people besides donating tissues such as a pair of eyes and skin. He told the audience that Nagpur is fortunate to have a Skin Bank. He emphasized that cornea and skin can be donated after natural death as well as brain death. He explained in detail:

    • Types of organ donation and who can be a donor.
    • The status of Organ Donation in India and their requirement Vs donation rates
    • Myths surrounding organ donation which should be a matter of the past.
    • Difference between natural death and brain death
    • Age is not a constraint in donating their organs
    • Importance of donor card
    • To pledge their organs they can register at MOHAN Foundation
    • Request to use MOHAN Foundation website and helpline number

    Few questions asked by the participants

    2. What is Eye donation

    3. What is bone marrow transplant?

    All the questions were answered and most of the participants picked up pamphlets and the consent form which would be submitted by the office bearers to MOHAN Foundation. 2 participants took donor cards. In the end they showed interest and said they would like to do more programs with MOHAN Foundation.
