On September 4, 2024, Mr. Gabriel Pereira, an Organ Donation Ambassador from the MOHAN Foundation, was invited to deliver a talk on organ donation to the students of V. M. Salgaocar College of Law in Miramar, Panjim, Goa. The event was organized by the MOG Foundation in collaboration with the N.S.S. Unit of V. M. Salgaocar College of Law.
Gabriel began by introducing himself and the MOHAN Foundation, sharing his personal reasons for joining the Foundation and promoting the cause of organ donation.
As part of the awareness program, Gabriel conducted a debate on the 'Opt-In vs Opt-Out' approach to organ donation in India. The debate was moderated by Assistant Professor Ramrai Naik, with students Cleodolinda Pinto, Kamaxi Kamat, Govind Sawant, and Purva Todankar actively participating.
During the session, Gabriel highlighted the importance of organ donation, explaining the different organs that can be donated, both by living and brain-dead individuals. He also elaborated on the concept of brain stem death, the distinction between cardiac death and brain death, and the corresponding organs and tissues that can be donated in each case. Additionally, he discussed the approved transplant hospitals in Goa, the current demand and supply gap for organs, and the option of whole-body donation.
Gabriel expressed his gratitude to Dr. Shaber Ali G. (Principal of V.M.S.C.L), Ms. Priscilla Fernandes (N.S.S. Program Officer), Mr. Siddhesh Tari, and Mr. Roshan Mathais from the MOG Foundation, as well as the students, for facilitating the event and allowing MOHAN Foundation to conduct the awareness talk.
The session was attended by close to 80 individuals, helping spread vital information about organ donation to the student community.
