Organ Donation Awareness Talk at St. Michael’s Convent High School, Anjuna, Goa

  • On January 27, 2025, Mr. Gabriel Pereira, an Organ Donation Ambassador for the MOHAN Foundation, delivered an inspiring talk on organ donation to the students of St. Michael’s Convent High School in Anjuna, Goa.

He began by posing a thought-provoking question: Can a person who passes away at home become an organ donor? Most students responded affirmatively. Mr. Pereira then clarified that while organ donation is not possible in such cases, tissue donation—including skin, eyes, and, in some cases, the entire body—remains an option.

Introducing the MOHAN Foundation, he highlighted its 27-year legacy in promoting organ donation. He also shared a deeply personal story about his sister-in-law’s kidney transplant, which motivated him to complete the Foundation’s Organ Donation Ambassador course. Since then, he has been committed to raising awareness, striving to ensure that no one loses their life while waiting for an organ transplant.

Encouraging the students to extend the conversation beyond the classroom, he urged them to discuss organ donation with their families and friends.

Using a PowerPoint presentation, Mr. Pereira covered key topics, including circulatory and brain-stem death, the organ and tissue donation process, organ allocation, green corridors, and how to obtain a donor card. He provided practical steps to become a donor, such as scanning a QR code on the MOHAN Foundation’s website or opting for organ donation while applying for a driver’s license.

Around 60 students attended the session and gained valuable insights into organ donation.

To reinforce his message, Mr. Pereira recommended watching Aye Zindagi, currently streaming on Zee5. The film is based on the true story of Vinay, a software engineer diagnosed with liver cirrhosis, and his emotional journey with grief counselor Revathy Rajan. Her character is inspired by Lalitha Raghuram, the Country Director of the MOHAN Foundation, who, along with her family, made the courageous decision to donate her son’s organs after his passing.
