Dr. Ravi Wankhede was invited by Dr. Jyoti Pati, Principal of Renuka College of Arts, Nagpur to give a talk on organ donation and transplantation to the staff and students on 4th January 2016.
The Principal introduced and welcomed the speaker Dr. Ravi Wankhede. She said that the subject is of vital importance and should be understood by each and every one. There were 75 staff and students attending the session.
Dr. Wankhede gave a detailed information through a PPP giving the historical, religious, social angle of the subject. He began by telling the audience that the Prime Minister Shri. Narendra Modi spoke on the subject in his ‘Man ki baat’ Radio talk in October 2015.
Dr. Wankhede told the audience that although organs could be donated by living persons, what is important is that the donations can be done after death too. He explained the concept of ‘brain death’ and the miracle a dead person could do by saving several lives, which otherwise would be either burnt or buried. He said organ donation is the highest social service to mankind. He also told that all religions advocate organ donation, yet our country lags behind miserably. This he said was due to misunderstandings and unawareness of the subject.
He gave example of Tamil Nadu, where the rate of organ donation very high as compared to other States. He said students have a responsibility to change the thinking and take forward the mission to spread awareness of the subject in the relatives, families and friends, so that lakhs of people who require organs could continue to live.
Dr. Wankhede was thanked by the Management for enlightening the staff and students on the subject. The Principal Dr. Jyoti Patil, pledged to donate her organs and offered to help others too to pledge.
