On January 29, 2025, Mr. Gabriel Pereira, an Organ Donation Ambassador from the MOHAN Foundation, conducted an awareness talk on organ donation at the Nirmala Institute of Education, Panjim, Goa.
Mr. Pereira began the session by presenting a video about the MOHAN Foundation and sharing a deeply personal story about his sister-in-law, who underwent a kidney transplant. This life-changing experience inspired him to actively promote organ donation. Over time, he has conducted over a hundred awareness sessions, participated in information desks, and contributed to events like the Carnival and Purple Fest. He stressed the importance of raising awareness so that more people can support the cause and help "GIFT A LIFE" to those suffering from end-stage organ failure in Goa and across India.
Using a PowerPoint presentation, he covered key aspects of organ donation, including:
• Laws related to organ donation
• Types of death and their relevance to organ donation
• Organs and tissues that can be donated in cases of circulatory death and brain stem death
• An explanation of brain stem death and its implications
• How individuals can express their consent for organ donation
• Health precautions, particularly for individuals with hypertension or diabetes
To make the session more engaging, Mr. Pereira shared a powerful video testimony from Ms. Shreya Siddanagowder, Asia's first double-hand transplant recipient, and a short animated presentation on organ donation by Shweta Gupta.
Additionally, he recommended watching Aye Zindagi, a film currently streaming on Zee5. Based on a true story, the movie follows Vinay, a software engineer diagnosed with liver cirrhosis, and his emotional journey with grief counsellor Revathy Rajan. Her character is inspired by Ms. Lalitha Raghuram, Country Director of the MOHAN Foundation, who, along with her family, made the brave decision to donate her son’s organs after his passing.
The principal, Sr. Delia Antao (DHM), expressed her gratitude to Mr. Pereira and the MOHAN Foundation for conducting the session. She appreciated their efforts in raising awareness about organ donation and expressed her intention to invite the foundation again to conduct similar sessions for other departments of the institute.
Around 70 students attended the session
