Updated on Wednesday, December 11, 2024
  • On December 2, 2024, Mr. Gabriel Pereira, an Organ Donation Ambassador for the MOHAN Foundation, delivered an inspiring talk on organ donation to students at the College of Art in Panjim, Goa.

Mr. Pereira began by introducing the MOHAN Foundation and its remarkable 27-year journey in promoting organ donation. He shared his personal story of his sister-in-law’s kidney transplant, which motivated him to take the Foundation's Organ Donation Ambassador course. Since then, he has been dedicated to raising awareness about organ donation, striving to ensure that no one dies while waiting for an organ.

He encouraged students to extend the conversation beyond the college, urging them to inspire their families and friends to support this life-saving cause.

Using a PowerPoint presentation, Mr. Pereira covered essential topics such as circulatory and brain-stem death, the organ and tissue donation process, organ allocation, green corridors, and how to obtain a donor card. He provided practical guidance on becoming a donor, including scanning a QR code on the MOHAN Foundation’s website or opting for organ donation while applying for a driver’s license.

To engage the audience, he asked questions about transplant hospitals in Goa and commonly transplanted organs. He also stressed the importance of safety measures, advising students to wear helmets and seat belts and to encourage their families to follow suit.

Approximately 30 students attended the session and received informational materials on organ donation.

To reinforce his message, Mr. Pereira recommended watching the film Aye Zindagi, currently streaming on Zee5. The film tells the true story of Vinay, a software engineer diagnosed with liver cirrhosis, and his emotional journey with grief counsellor Revathy Rajan. It also highlights the decision made by Mrs. Lalitha Raghuram, Country Director of the MOHAN Foundation, and her family to donate their son’s organs after his passing.

Ms. Maria, Assistant Professor in the Department of Applied Art, expressed heartfelt gratitude on behalf of Principal Mr. Wilfred Goes to Mr. Pereira and the MOHAN Foundation for their dedicated efforts in promoting organ donation.
