Organ Donation Awareness Session organized by MOHAN Foundation at Guru Nanak College, Chennai

  • On 23rd September, 2013 an awareness session on organ donation was organized for the students of Guru Nanak College, Velachery, Chennai. Ms. Kavitha S and Mr. Prakash K, Transplant Coordinators’, MOHAN Foundation, Chennai conducted the session. Mr. Ashok R, Trainee Transplant Coordinator, MOHAN Foundation, Chennai helped them in organizing the event.

     

    Totally 500 students participated in the programme. Since, it was a huge group the students were segregated and three separate sessions were held. The aim was to sensitise the  participants about the importance of organ donation.

     

    In the presentation the following topics were covered: activities of MOHAN Foundation across the country to strengthen the deceased organ donation programme; types of organ donation: live and deceased; difference between brain death, cardiac death and coma; causes of brain death; the need for organ donation; who can donate organs and tissues, about cornea donation; importance of the consent by family for donation to take place; importance of the donor card; and about donor card registration.

     

    The participants raised several queries such as: how are organs shared, who allocates organs, where the organ retrieval takes place, and in case of an emergency who should be contacted. The queries were answered by Ms. Kavitha, Mr. Prakash and Mr. Ashok.  

     

    All the students showed their support for the cause by raising a palm and taking a pledge to be an organ donor. The college authorities said only with the permission of the parents the donor card will be issued hence the cards were left with the college authorities for the interested students to collect later.
