On February 15, 2016, MOHAN Foundation conducted an awareness session at Kamrah Institute of Innovative Teaching {KIIT} Global School, Pitampura. This was the second session of the TOI drive to promote organ donation at the school level.
KIIT World School, formerly known as New State Academy was established in 1984 founded by the parent society, Vidyapati Sansthan (Regd.). The focus of school has always been to provide education for life and empower students to lead a life that is demonstrative of school ethos. It promotes environment that helps an individual grow up to be as socially responsible, spiritually inclined, intellectually elevated and extremely empathetic towards peoples’ concerns. Since the inception, the school has actively participated and partnered in various community projects. The sensitivity towards environment is reflected through cleanliness drives, zero litter movement, tree plantations, ECO club activities.
The school gets the Times of India newspaper subscribed for the children. That is also how Times of India got MOHAN Foundation to conduct an awareness session on Organ Donation. And KIIT being very particular after their children getting the best of everything was more than happy to conduct the same. Ms. Prerna Chadha from Times of India had organised the program in coordination with Ms. Priyanka Sikri (School Coordinator, KIIT Global School). Ms. Mareena Thomas (Programme Officer-Delhi NCR) took the session and Dr. Muneet Kaur Sahi (Programme Manager-Delhi NCR) accompanied her.
The children were quite exuberant and answered all the queries asked by Mareena and Dr. Muneet that led to the session being more interesting and participative. The children were surprised to hear another type of death being brain death. They found it quite interesting to know that only a brain dead person is eligible to donate organs. Through the session they also got better understanding on which are the parts of the body that can be donated in brain death and cardiac death.
On being asked by the School Coordinator that what is whole body donation, Dr. Muneet explained the concept and process of body donation. She also shared with the students about Dadhichi Deh Daan Samiti, an NGO that is working towards increasing awareness on organ donation in Delhi-NCR. She also explained to them that medical students pursuing undergraduate course in medicine use these bodies.
MOHAN Foundation requested all the students to talk to their parents about organ donation, as that would be the best they could do at their level. Mareena also introduced the Angels of Change program and few students showed interest to join the same. Ms. Priyanka also showed interest and agreed to take the program at the school level for giving options to more children.
About 150 students attended the session.
