MOHAN Foundation speaks about organ donation at a Rotary International District 3030 event in Nashik

  • The Rotary International District 3030 District Governor Rtn. Dr. D. S. Deshmukh, Chairman Presidents Enclave Nashik Rtn. Abhimanyu Pawar, President of Rotary Club of Nashik West  Rtn. Ramshankar Kejriwal, President of Rotary Club of Nashik Mid Town Rtn. Chetan Bhagat, President of Rotary Club of Nashik Ambad Rtn. Tushar Chavan and Co-Chair of Dist 3030 Organ Donation Committee & Convenor Rtn. Sunil Deshpande and others had invited Rtn. Dr. Ravi Wankhede the Chairman of Rotary District 3030 Organ donation Committee  and  Centre Head of MOHAN Foundation Nagpur as a keynote speaker on Organ Donation on 23rd February 2015 at Nashik. The program was held at Shankaracharya Sankul.

     

    Dr. Ravi Wankhede gave a lucid audio-visual presentation on the history, need, importance of organ donation. He stressed the need to understand the concept behind organ donation from those who had sustained brain death. Explaining that such people who have either pledged or their relatives consent to donate their organs can save up to eight lives. Such patients could also donate tissues such as the eyes, skin, bone, etc. He informed that in developed countries as much 90% organs are harvested from brain dead patients as compared to less than 2% in our country. He said just about 500 people get a kidney out of about 2 lakh who suffer from chronic kidney failure.

     

    He informed that this can change if we are made aware and do not succumb to irrational beliefs and practices. Giving example of the success of Tamil Nadu and the government hospital at Chennai, Dr. Wankhede highlighted that in India is capable of doing it. Dr. Wankhede has been spearheading the movement in Rotary for the past four years in his club and District. It was time that the movement should gain a momentum so that millions in the country who suffer for want of life saving organs are able to get a second chance in life.

     

    Immediate Past District Governor Rtn. Kishor Kedia spoke on body donation and also asked Rotary to lead the society and setup an example for others to pledge to donate organs.
