On November 30, 2015, MOHAN Foundation conducted an awareness session on organ donation for the students of Department of Social Work at Jamia Millia Islamia, Jamia Nagar, New Delhi. Mareena Thomas (Programme Officer, MOHAN Foundation, Delhi-NCR) organised the talk by coordinating with Ms. Alpana a student from Jamia University who was interning with MOHAN Foundation. Alpana got so convinced of the cause that she wanted to share the knowledge on such a cause with her fellow batch mates.
The Foundation had earlier also conducted a talk in the month of April because of Dr. Rashmi Jain's (Assistant Professor, Department of Social Work) initiative who supports MOHAN Foundation and the cause of organ donation.
There were 58 students from the department of social work and diploma course of public health. Dr. Muneet took the session and Ms. Sonam & Ms. Mareena accompanied her. She started the session by asking few questions to understand the participant's level of knowledge regarding organ donation. Though all of them had heard about organ donation but only 6 had ever heard about brain death. She then apprised them about India's donation rate which is abysmally low as compared to other countries on the organ donation world map statistics. She then placed the concept of brain death in the picture, on how a brain dead person can save 7 lives by donating his/her organ. The students were patient listeners and tried to grasp as much as they understood.
The discussion became more alive when question of religion, especially Islam supports organ donation or not came up. The group was divided in their views. It was clarified further that no religion negates organ donation. Even Islam for that matter supports serving a person in need and there is no better gift than a gift of live to another person through organ donation when ones die.
At the end of the talk a short film on brain death was shown. The session concluded with19 donor cards being picked up.
