On September 23, 2023, MOHAN Foundation conducted an awareness-raising organ donation pledge campaign for the citizens constituted under the Health and Wellness Centre (HWC), Awang Wabagai, Imphal-West (I/W) District, Manipur. It was conducted in association with the Manipur Directorate of Health Services.
As representatives of MOHAN Foundation, Ms. Laishram Monica Devi, Programme Officer, and Ms. Thoidingjam Udayini Khuman, Transplant Coordinator, participated in the campaign. Dr. Ningombam Homendro, Deputy Director of Manipur Health Services, contacted the team, and Ms. Ranita Maibam, Community Health Officer, HWC-Awang Wabagai I/W, Manipur, coordinated the entire programme.
The programme was conducted as part of "Sewa Pakhwada", a series of wellness drives and health programmes launched under the 'Ayushman Bhava' campaign by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, India. The key elements of the programme were an awareness session, an organ donation pledge drive, the creation of an Ayushman Bharat-Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY) card, and an Ayushman Bharat Health Account (ABHA) ID.
Ms. Monica spoke at the awareness sessions in three different villages about the significance of organ donation and its social necessity. She also emphasised the organs and tissues that can be donated in cases of circulatory and brain death. Ms. Monica addressed the imperative need for passion in this field by describing the hardships of patients waiting for deceased donors. The significance of the family's consent was also emphasised to the citizens.
Ms. Udayini instructed the public on how to sign up on the NOTTO (National Organs and Tissues Transplant Organisation) website following the sessions. Mrs. Miranda Devi, a local Accredited Social Health Activist (ASHA), committed to organ donation, shared her insights with the public. She said, "I have been working for humanity for several years, but I never imagined there would be no greater humanitarian service than organ donation."
Afterwards, a brief discussion was held, and frequently asked questions (FAQs) translated into the local language were distributed to the participants to help them better comprehend the topic.
Close to 300 people attended the programme, and eight of them pledged their support for organ donation.
