On 27th September, 2014 a sensitization session on organ donation was organized for the nursing interns of Sir Gangaram hospital by MOHAN Foundation, Delhi-NCR. The session was conducted in the Auditorium adjoining the nurse's training institute in the hospital premises.
Sir Gangaram hospital is a 675 bedded multi speciality hospital that has acquired the status of a premium medical institution due to its comprehensive and state of the art health care services across a long span of time. MOHAN Foundation, Delhi has had a long standing acquaintance with the hospital as the organ donation of the hospital's former chairman Mr Tejram was coordinated successfully by the team of transplant coordinators from MF, Delhi.
The session was conducted with the help of a powerpoint presentation by Ms Sonam Choeden. The slides covered the topics underlying organ donation in detail including the types of donation, conditions in which organs can be donated etc.
The phenomenon of brain stem death was explained in detail with the help of a short video. The session was interactive as most of the nurses seemed to have some former information about organ donation according to the pre-awareness survey that was taken. Also they could relate to the cause even better when they were informed about MOHAN's previous association with the hospital during the donation of Mr Tejram's organs.
While talking about the role of a transplant coordinator and his/her importance in the hospital setting, the participants informed that within the hospital, whenever the codes for death and emergency are initiated, the counselors and transplant coordinators are also a part of the reporting team that treats the patient. This showed the amount of enthusiasm among the hospital staff to facilitate deceased donations.
A total of 104 nurses attended the session and 88 donor cards were taken.
