On August 9, 2024, MOHAN Foundation conducted a virtual session to raise awareness about organ donation for employees of SBI General Insurance across India. The session was led by Ms. Simran Anand, Programme Officer at MOHAN Foundation (MF) NCR.
Ms. Anand began by introducing MOHAN Foundation to the participants and explaining the basic concepts of recipients and donors. She emphasized the critical need for increased awareness about organ donation, highlighting the significant gap between the demand for and the supply of organs in India.
The session covered a comprehensive range of essential topics, including:
• An overview of organ donation.
• Types of organs that can be donated during life and after death.
• Understanding brain stem death and the process of establishing it.
• Contraindications to organ donation.
• Eye donation and precautions for preserving corneas.
• The legal framework under the Transplantation of Human Organs and Tissues Act, 1994.
• The role of the MOHAN Foundation in promoting organ donation.
• The importance of individual and public involvement in raising awareness.
• Dispelling common myths and sharing facts about organ donation.
Ms. Anand urged participants to discuss organ donation with their families and emphasized the importance of pledging to become organ donors. She also mentioned the option in driver's licenses that allows individuals to register as organ donors.
One participant shared her aspiration to inspire others to support this noble cause and encourage them to pledge. She added that she has been following the MOHAN Foundation for a long time and was impressed to learn that Ms. Jaya Jairam, the foundation's Project Director, is a kidney recipient herself and has dedicated her work to helping those suffering from organ failure.
Participants actively engaged in the session and raised questions such as:
• Can you explain tissue donation in detail?
• How can we address the concerns of individuals who worry that their donated organs might be sold?
Nearly 100 participants attended the virtual session.
