On 4th October, 2013 an awareness session on organ donation and organ transplantation was organised for the staff from the Intensive Care Units (ICU) of the following Departments: Urology, Pediatric, Nephrology, Neurology and Neurosurgery. The talk was also organised for the staff from the Dialysis Unit, JIPMER. Mr. Ananth R, Transplant Coordinator, MOHAN Foundation – deputed at Pondicherry Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS), Puducherry represented the Foundation and conducted the sessions.
Dr. Biju Pottakat, Assistant Professor, Department of Surgical Gastroenterology, JIPMER and Dr. Dorairajan, Head of Department of Urology, JIPMER took the initiative to coordinate the sessions for the staff.
Mr. Ananth covered the following topics: types of organ donations – after brain death, after cardiac death and while still alive; organs that be donated in the various circumstances; the number of hours the various organs can be preserved before transplantation; the importance of the donor card; role of nurses and transplant coordinators in the process of donation and transplantation and about the legal formalities involved. Finally; he briefly told them about the training programmes held by MOHAN Foundation for those interested in being transplant coordinators.
There were totally 14 nurses and 4 technicians who participated in the session. All of them picked up a donor card.
