An awareness session on organ donation was conducted for the students of School of Allied Health Sciences, Avinashiligam Institutefor Home Science and Higher Education for Women, Coimbatore through an online webinar on March10, 2023. About 76 students and a few faculty attended the webinar. Dr Hemal Kanvinde (Quality Assurance Officer), Ms Arshiya Fathima H (Helpline Counselor) and Mr Shanth Raghul Raj (Project Executive Education) of MOHAN Foundation conducted the sessions.Mrs. Uma Devi A, Head of Department of Physician Assistant welcomed the gathering. Dr. K. Narendiran, Director, School of Allied and Health Care Sciences felicitated the speakers and spoke on the importance of organ donation.
The session commenced with a video explaining the value of organ donation. Dr. Hemal Kanvinde started her talk on the concepts, law, myths, process for pledging organs and other relevant facts about organ donation, skin donation and eye donation. She additionally narrated a donor story and a recipient story. An educational video explaining brain stem death was screened.
In order to make the students understand the concepts better and also the role of media is creating myths, Ms. Arshiya Fathima conducted a quiz based on Tamil Movies that had reference to organ donation. It was based on the format of “Connections” a popular TV show in Tamil nadu. The session was interactive with the students participating actively in the quiz. Ms Arshiya spoke on the usage of Helpline number 18001037100.
In the next session a Recipient testimony of Mr Ahmed Hussain was played. It made the students aware of the pre and post-transplant situation from a recipient point of view.
In the final session, Mr Shanth Raghul gave information on Transplant Coordinator as a career. He spoke of the duties and the training available to students to pursue this profession. He gave an explanation of the two courses offered by MOHAN Foundation.
