On September 4, 2024, MOHAN Foundation (MF) was invited to conduct a session on organ donation as part of a five-day "Induction Course Training Program" for Traffic Police personnel at the Traffic Police Headquarters in Todapur, New Delhi. The session was led by Ms. Simran Anand and Ms. Sanya Santosh, Programme Officer at MF, Delhi NCR.
This induction training course was organized for newly inducted police personnel up to the rank of Inspectors in the Traffic Unit. The session was attended by both Upper and Lower Subordinates.
Ms. Simran began the session by discussing the Green Corridor initiative and the critical role the police play in traffic management, helping organs reach recipients on time.
Ms. Sanya followed with a PowerPoint presentation, covering:
• The current state of organ donation in India
• The meaning of organ donation
• Organ donation during life and after death
• An explanation of brain death, its causes, and how it differs from coma
Ms. Simran then resumed the session and explained:
• Eye donation and the procedures required to preserve corneas after death
• An overview of the Human Organ Transplantation Act of 1994, including the mandatory "required request" clause
• Contraindications that may prevent organ donation
• The role of MOHAN Foundation
• Dispelling myths and sharing facts about organ donation
Examples of natural death and brain death were also provided to highlight the differences between the two and explain what organs and tissues can be donated in each case.
The session was highly interactive, with enthusiastic participation and numerous questions. Some of the key questions included:
• Does brain death occur in suicidal cases?
• Does the donor's age matter?
Approximately 60 participants attended the session.
